IGCSE – A brief Guide

What is IGCSE?

IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is a two-year programme leading to externally set, marked and certificated examinations from the University of Cambridge. It is a unique UK government endorsed programme provided to thousands of schools around the world.

Many students are offered a curriculum across Years 10 and 11 (Grades 9 and 10) that usually includes up to, but not limited to, 9 IGCSE examination subjects. These include the core subjects of English Language, Mathematics and Science (either as a double award subject or a combination of single subjects from Biology, Chemistry and Physics). Three or four other subjects might be taken from Geography, History, German, Spanish, English Literature, Business Studies, Economics, Computer Science, and Additional Mathematics. GK Consultants provides outstanding academic support in all these subjects although exactly what is available in any particular year depends upon several factors. What is ensured is suitability for our students and the key curriculum factors of breadth and balance.

Other examination boards also offer IGCSEs. GK Consultants offers academic support for subjects that are designed and assessed by these other examination boards, such as Edexcel.

GK Consultants tutors know how to provide targeted curriculum support in their specialist subjects and also offer examination techniques and strategies for each IGCSE examination paper.

IGCSE Structure

IGCSEs are two-year courses designed for 14 to 16 year olds. IGCSEs are known for developing vital educational knowledge, understanding and skills. They are established qualifications that keep pace with educational developments and trends and so are an ideal foundation for higher level courses such as AS (Advanced Subsidiary) and A (Advanced) Levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Recognised throughout the world, by academic institutes and employers, they are a mark of quality and evidence of real ability.

Students typically sit seven to nine subjects in one session at the end of Year 11. Schools can offer any combination of subjects with each subject being certificated separately. Over 70 subjects are available, offering something for all learners of different abilities, interests and backgrounds.

IGCSE is taken in over 100 countries by an annual candidate entry of more than 250,000. Grade C in IGCSE English (either First Language or Additional Language) satisfies the English proficiency requirements of many universities in the UK and other English-speaking countries.

They are taken as single subjects or occasionally as double subjects, for example Coordinated Science (requiring twice the work and having double the value).

      Covid-19: Tutorial Procedures

Just recently the Covid-19 situation has become increasingly worse once again and obviously worrying for all of us. Schools are closed or likely to be closed and will be offering online learning to supplement and replace all classroom teaching, homework assignments, examination preparation and project work. We here at GK Consultants will continue to work with students on their learning, school assignments and try to support each of them in terms of organisation, time management and other guidance as needed. Intensive support for IGCSE, A Level, SAT, ACT, AP and IB examinations will continue as we approach crucial dates during these next few months. Homeschooling programmes will continue as before.

GK Consultants will continue to operate as follows:

      • Students can have their tutorials delivered either in person or by an online learning interface such as Skype or Zoom. Remote methods of teaching and learning work well, and we have used online teaching and learning techniques for many years. Online tutorials are scheduled at the same time as their face-to-face counterparts or can be rescheduled if an alternative time is convenient for the student and the tutor.

At GK Consultants we are always here to discuss all matters relating to your son’s or your daughter’s education. Just because we are dealing with a health crisis does not mean that education is interrupted – you child’s future is as important today as it ever was.

We look forward to hearing from you if you have any questions and let us all hope that the situation improves soon and we will be able to look back on this current pandemic in terms such as, “Do you remember when……...”

Best wishes to you all: I, my academic team and administrative team wish you and your family a happy, healthy, safe, and successful 2021.
